In Northside, we follow a literacy framework that includes the explicit and systematic teaching of foundational literacy skills.  The instructional components within our literacy framework promote the gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student.  Our students engage in literacy learning during read alouds of mentor texts, shared and performance reading/writing, mini lessons, small group instruction, and independent reading/writing.

Reading Language Arts at Wanke ES

Our campus facilitates proficiency in reading and writing in a variety of ways. We help students develop a love for reading early on by providing many opportunities to explore texts in multisensory ways across multiple media. We investigate the many characteristics of different genres and encourage plenty of choices. We participate in campus-wide reading activities such as Read Around the School, Read Across America, World Read Aloud Day, Family Engagement Nights, and Read for the Record.  We provide enrichment for all students with Depth and Complexity.  We also have many different interventions and supports in English and Spanish for our students who may be struggling in reading. We communicate students' progress with parents every step of the way. We believe in educators partnering with families to ensure student success.
