Families are encouraged to review the results together with their student as part of the decision-making process.

Yes. Students may participate in UIL activities (sports, band, etc.) at their home campus of residence.Students must attend the designated in-person class periods and practices daily. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the home campus for these activities; the district does not provide it.

Northside Virtual Academy operates on a "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) model. A laptop (not a phone or tablet) with at least 8 GB of RAM, an integrated camera, and a microphone is necessary. Students need headphones, a mouse, and ideally an external monitor for complex work.

The district offers an "Opt-In" program for non-touch Chromebooks. This requires an insurance deposit and form submission. A MiFi program is available for eligible students.

Yes. Under Texas law, all state-mandated examsโ€”such as STAAR and End-of-Course (EOC) examsโ€”must be taken in person at a designated district site.

There is a specific 14-day withdrawal window at the start of the semester where you may return to your home campus without issue. After that two-week window, a one-year commitment is required to ensure staffing stability.

If a student is not engaging or succeeding academically, the district reserves the right to return them to their home campus to prevent them from falling behind. More information will be published when registration opens.

Attendance is based on daily engagement, not "seat time".

Under the new Texas Senate Bill 569, virtual learning has shifted from a supplemental service to a primary educational path.

It is no longer just remote learning; it is a specialized environment with rigorous instructional design

Additional tools and resources will be added as they are finalized.

For the 2025โ€“2026 school year, Northsideโ€™s virtual program will serve students in grades 9 through 11. As the Texas Education Agency continues to establish new rules, we are taking a phased implementation approach. This allows us to focus our resources on ensuring full compliance with state attendance and funding standards while providing a high-quality, flexible learning environment. We recognize the importance of the senior year; however, we have chosen to refine our support systems with a smaller cohort before expanding to include the specialized credit and graduation requirements unique to the 12th grade.

While some acceleration may be possible, the program requires students to attend daily for 240 minutes. This structure means the Virtual Academy is not designed to support students finishing a full year early.

The Virtual Academy is committed to a traditional calendar, similar to a comprehensive campus. Students who are significantly under-credited may have better opportunities for credit retrieval at a comprehensive high school. We encourage students with extensive credit retrieval needs to stay at their current comprehensive campus.

At this time, we plan to offer a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses designed to provide students with rigorous, college-level curricula.

Once you have completed the registration process via the Home Access Center (HAC), your campus registrar (for returning NISD students) or a member of our team(for new students)  will review the submission to ensure all documentation is in order. During this interim period, your student will be temporarily placed at their current campus rather than the new virtual campus. This temporary placement is a necessary since all new full-time virtual campuses must receive authorization from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) before officially operating and processing formal campus transfers. This is expected later this spring.

Regarding course selectiononce the Board approves the official provider and our course catalog is finalized, our staff will conduct a comparison against the specific courses you selected earlier this semester. If any questions or scheduling conflicts arise while reviewing those selections, a counselor or staff member will reach out to you directly to discuss your academic options and ensure you are enrolled in the correct classes.

Letters will be mailed to families in late March or early April informing them of their status. This letter will also include a date for a virtual orientation meeting scheduled with Virtual Academy staff and our selected vendor in early summer.
