Board of Trustees

Working as a team of eight in conjunction with the Superintendent, the NISD Board of Trustees are an elected governance board with a shared sense of purpose focused on meeting the needs of all NISD students and the communities they serve.

District of Innovation Plan

The District of Innovation concept, passed during the 84th Legislative Session in House Bill 1842, gives traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas’ open-enrollment charter schools. The flexibility derives from the district’s ability to exempt itself from state mandates that may limit its ability to implement innovative ideas.

Superintendent Dr. John M. Craft

John Craft began his career in education as a Biology teacher and Football/Baseball Coach in Southlake Carroll in 1999. He also had the opportunity to serve as an Assistant Principal for Carroll High School during his time with the district. After nine years with Carroll ISD, he became the Principal of Timberview High School, a large high school located in South Arlington and encompassed within the Mansfield ISD. John has served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Hamilton Independent School District prior to becoming the Deputy Superintendent for the Killeen Independent School District and then Superintendent of Schools where he led the fast-growth district of 45,000 students and 6,300 employees for 9 years.

Entering his 14th year as Superintendent, he was hired in 2023 as the Superintendent of Northside Independent School District, the 4th largest in the State encompassing 102,000 students, 14,000 employees across 131 campuses.

Born in Temple, Texas, Dr. Craft spent the majority of his childhood growing up outside of Fort Worth and graduating from W.E. Boswell High School. Dr. Craft received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Texas before completing his Doctorate in Educational Administration at Tarleton State University.

A life-long learner, Dr. Craft serves on numerous Local, State and National committees to include the Texas School Alliance, The Texas Association of School Administrators State Advocacy Committee and the State Advisory Committee on Educational Opportunities for Military Children to name a few. Dr. Craft comes from a long line of family educators and being a sixth generation native Texan, he remains committed to helping shape the future of public education and ensuring students are provided optimal opportunities to better prepare themselves to be successful young adults and our leaders of tomorrow.

History

In 1949, 12 rural school districts joined to form Northside Consolidated School District. Though spread out across Northwest Bexar county, the community came together to build a high school because they recognized the importance of education for all children.

NISD-TV produces a variety of informational and promotional videos about Northside's educational programs, schools, staff members, students, challenges and successes.
