Fourteen NISD Academic Decathlon teams competed in the 2024 Regional Academic Decathlon competition hosted this past weekend at Warren High School. The teams competing were Brandeis, Brennan, Clark, Harlan, Health Careers, Holmes, Jay, Marshall, O’Connor, Sotomayor, Stevens, Taft, and Warren high schools.
Regional winners were Warren High School, first place; Marshall High School, second place; and Health Careers High School, third place.
The top 30 large schools from across the state will head to the Thomas E. Moseley Championship Finals on Feb. 23-25 at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Both Warren and Marshall will compete in the finals.
The next 40 top performing schools from across the state head to the Frisco Invitational Meet in Frisco on Feb. 23-25. NISD Academic Decathlon teams advancing to this level are Health Careers, O’Connor, and Clark high schools.
The Academic Decathlon promotes student achievement by providing a format in which high school students compete in various academic areas. In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay and two speeches, written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, language/literature, mathematics, economics, (social) science, and the Super Quiz. This year’s topic is “The American Revolution.
Much like the Olympics, decathletes compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals and a chance to advance to the next competition level.
