The unique contributions of school counselors to schools and students are being recognized as part of National School Counseling Week, Feb. 4-8. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

“School counselors are a critical factor in the cultivation of safe, strong, and well-prepared communities,” said Dr. Kimberly Ridgley, Director of NISD’s Guidance Department. “I am so proud of the work counselors do with the students in NISD.”

“Our counselors wear so many hats in their roles,” Ridgley said. “They keep the pulse of the campuses by seeing what’s going on with their students and families, while also keeping up with trends and social issues.”

NISD’s 294 school counselors have contact with all 106,000 students in the District through classroom presentations and individual visits to help guide students in course selection, maximizing educational opportunities, and developing skills for future success.

Ridgley noted that there are three words to describe the mission of a counselor – “here to serve.”

As National School Counseling Week is celebrated across Northside, another three words should be highlighted, “thank you, counselors!”
