Library

"Information literacy"- the ability to find & use information - is the key to lifelong learning. The Monroe May Library strives to:
  • teach information literacy through direct instruction in age-appropriate activities at all grade levels
  • support student research and leisure reading, and
  • meet the information needs of our school community.

Reading is encouraged through story times, State & National Book Awards and other programs. The Library hosts visits by authors & storytellers, and our school has a Book Fair every year. The librarian and classroom teachers collaborate to provide curriculum-integrated lessons. A balanced collection of more than 19,000 books, periodicals, CD-ROMs and DVDs support the curriculum and are continually updated. Digital ebooks are available through OverDrive, Tumblebook Library and Destiny Quest (Follett ebooks.) We have a collection of Spanish language materials to support the Dual-Language Program, as well as a number of books in other foreign languages to support our English-As-A-Second-Language learners. The Internet is accessible from all our computers. Streaming video is provided through Discovery Education.

Each class has a scheduled library time. Students also come to the library during posted "walk-in" times.  The Library is open before school at 7:30am and open after school until 3:10pm for children accompanied by their parent or guardian.

Kindergarteners checkout one book; 1st thru 5th graders may checkout two books at a time. Books are due in two week. Parents may check out 5 books. Parent checkout is before & after school from 7:30-8:00am and 2:40-3:10pm. Overdue notices are sent out on a regular basis. No overdue fines are charged; however, more books may not be checked out until current ones are checked in, and lost/damaged books must be paid for.
