Operation Mail Call keeps families close

May 14, 2013

April is the Month of the Military Child but Lewis ES supports their military families year round. Of the 810 students enrolled, 130 students (or 16 percent) have military affiliations.

Operation Mail Call was created several years ago by Art Teacher Lila Owens as a way for students to connect with other students dealing with deployment and to give students the opportunity to make holiday cards to send to their loved ones. Mail Call students make cards for Winter/Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Spring/Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

At last week’s Mail Call, students made Easter cards, went on an Easter egg hunt in the school courtyard, and enjoyed a special snack.

Of the 23 students currently participating in Mail Call, 11 of them have parents or other close family members who are currently deployed. (After family members return, students are allowed to remain in Mail Call and support their peers.)
