Fifth graders at Helotes ES are investigating healthy eating options and trying their hands at preparing a variety of delicious foods.
As part of a mini-grant awarded to Marcela Guzman, cafeteria manager, the students are learning about proper nutrition, portion control, and various ways to cook healthy foods and snacks.
The young chefs have been meeting after school, preparing and sampling their creations. They also share their nutritional new knowledge by creating video bulletins for the morning announcements.
In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, the young culinary artists planned, prepared, cooked and hosted a veritable feast for all the staff at their school.
“The students all enjoyed their hands-on, safe, positive experience, and the entire school has benefited from their efforts,” says Guzman.
