On April 22, Marena Gallo, a fifth grade student at Lewis ES, will be waving to the crowd from a barge during the Texas Cavaliers River Parade as the grand prize winner of the River Parade’s art contest. This is the second year for a student from Lewis ES to win the top prize.
In fact, NISD had three top finishers in the competition this year from their City Council Districts. Gallo represented District 6. Other winners were Liam Hessbrook, a fourth grade student from Glass ES, representing District 7; and Lillian Duma, a fifth grade student from Locke Hill ES, representing District 8.
Each of the students received a check for $1,000 to go toward school art supplies; a one-week scholarship for Summer Art Camp at Southwest School of Art; and King Antonio and his Royal entourage will pay a visit to each of the winners’ campuses.
The Texas Cavaliers added a prize this year for each runner-up in each district, awarding a check for $500 to go toward classroom art supplies. NISD had four runners-up, and they are: Christopher Coleto, second grade, Lewis ES; Sidney Martinez, fifth grade, Glass ES; Saul Gutierrez, fourth grade, Locke Hill ES; and Lyla Mathis, fifth grade, Kuentz ES.
