Pascual Gonzalez

As the Executive Director of Communications and spokesman for Northside ISD, Pascual Gonzalez is responsible for keeping the public informed of the news and events of Texas' fourth largest school district.

Gonzalez has spent his entire career in Northside ISD and has served in various capacities since 1977. A former teacher at Jones and Hobby middle schools and Holmes High School, he served as the Executive Director of Media & Technology before heading the Communications Department.

Gonzalez is a highly respected school communicator who has held various leadership positions in state and national school public relations associations. He is a Past President of the Texas School Public Relations Association and was named a National School Public Relations Association "Front Runner" for 2005. Also, in 2005, Gonzalez was named the "Public Relations Professional of the Year" by the San Antonio Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.  In 2014, TSPRA recognized Gonzalez as the 2014 Texas Key Communicator recipient.

Gonzalez is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in English and journalism. He earned his master's degree in educational management and leadership from Our Lady of the Lake University.


Monica Faulkenbery, APR

Monica Faulkenbery, APR, has more than 35 years of experience in public relations and has worked as director of communications for public and private colleges and public school systems in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Before joining Northside ISD in 1999, Faulkenbery served as director of communications for Eanes ISD.

Faulkenbery currently serves on numerous committees for the Texas School Public Relations Association, the San Antonio chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and National School Public Relations Association. She also has served on a variety of committees for the governors of Missouri and Texas including Teacher of the Year, State Reporting Requirements, and the Texas Air Expo.

Faulkenbery is a frequent guest lecturer for local colleges, universities, and organizations and shares her expertise about public relations planning, crisis communications, special event planning, and media relations.

She has won numerous prestigious awards for her service and talent, including the San Antonio PRSA Tex Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and the TSPRA Most Valuable Member Award in 2009.

In addition to her master's degree in corporate communications, Faulkenbery is Accredited in Public Relations by the Universal Accreditation Board.

Julie Ann Matonis
Communications Specialist

Julie Ann Matonis first joined the Communications Department in 2004 as the producer/writer/host for NISD-TV. She was named Communications Specialist in February 2013.

She is responsible for managing Northside's social media efforts, writing for district publications, working with the local media, and supporting the district's communications efforts.

During her tenure at NISD-TV, the Texas School Public Relations Association recognized the district's video productions with nine "Best of Category" Awards.

Before coming to Northside, Julie Ann worked as an Assignment Editor for News 9 San Antonio and as a freelance reporter for Fort Worth City Cable.

Julie Ann received her Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Texas Christian University in 2003. She attended elementary, middle and high school in Northside and was Valedictorian of the first graduating class from Communications Arts High School.

Since 2005, Julie Ann has proudly served as a mentor for Northside students. She also serves as Vice President for the TCU San Antonio Alumni Board.

Albert Thomas

Albert Thomas joined Northside's Communications Department in January 2011. Albert brings more than 10 years of web development experience working with some of San Antonio's most well-known and highly-respected companies and nonprofit organizations.

Prior to joining NISD, Albert developed website solutions for businesses such as Toyota Texas Manufacturing, Baptist Health Care System, and the San Antonio Independent School District.

Marcella Muncy

Marcella Muncy, a career web designer, built her first music and photography website in high school, and was hooked.  The internet and web development were ways for her to show and share her passions.

Marcella joined Northside's Communications Department in 2013.

In the past, she has served as a Web Technologist for North East ISD in the field of instructional technology for over eight years and also has worked with businesses and non-profit organizations.

Leslie Rodriguez
Creative Specialist

Leslie Rodriguez joined the Northside ISD Communications Department in February 2011 as NISD's Graphics Specialist. Leslie brings more than eight years of experience in graphic design with a specialization in print design.

Leslie began her graphic design career at local TV station KABB, where she was the Senior Graphic Designer in the Promotions Department for more than five years. She also was the Senior Graphic Designer at Interlex Advertising, where she developed turnkey print designs. Most recently, Leslie operated her own successful design company producing work for clients such as Taylor West Advertising, Red Collar Media, ARTS San Antonio, and a variety of San Antonio-based businesses.

Leslie is a graduate of San Antonio College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Print Graphics, Interactive Graphics, and Sequential Graphics.

Laurie Salazar
Media Specialist

BA, Communications
University of Texas - Pan American

Laurie is the newest member of the Communications Department. She is an award winning journalist who joined the team in April of 2013 as a Media Specialist and NISD-TV Producer/Host. Laurie produces, writes, and hosts a variety of feature and news stories for “Inside Northside Video Magazine”, a monthly 30 minute cable show. She also produces promotional and special event videos for the district. Her duties also include contributing to the district’s overall public relations initiative.

Laurie comes to Northside from main stream media and most recently from News 4 WOAI, San Antonio’s NBC Affiliate where she held the position of general assignments reporter/ fill in anchor. Laurie started her career in 1997, working as a news anchor for the CBS affiliate in Laredo. She then worked as a news anchor for the NBC and FOX affiliates in Corpus Christi, and as a news anchor for the ABC, CBS, and FOX affiliates in the Rio Grande Valley. She also worked as the Director of Marketing for Saks Fifth Avenue in San Antonio, and is currently an associate editor for her family’s South Texas magazine, “Woman 2 Woman”, featuring women making a difference in their community.

Laurie is a graduate of the University of Texas - Pan American where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with a specialization in broadcast journalism and a minor in Fine Arts..

Tim Irvin
Media Specialist

 

Tim Irvin joined the NISD Communications Department in 2008 with more than 25 years of experience in television news. Irvin has worked with all media formats and has extensive experience with live studio work, live field productions, linear and non-linear editing, and still photography.

Irvin is responsible for shooting and editing a variety of feature and news stories for Inside Northside Video Magazine, NISD-TV’s monthly cable show. He’s also responsible for creating promotional and special event videos for the District.

Irvin has worked in several television markets including KDBC-TV in El Paso; WBBH-TV in Ft. Myers, Fla.; KTUL-TV in Tulsa, Okla; and KENS-TV in San Antonio. Prior to coming to NISD, Irvin spent 13 years at KABB-TV, were he was senior photographer and helped manage a team of talented photographers. During his tenure at KABB, Irvin was one of the original photographers to help launch the Nine O’clock News.

Irvin is a graduate of El Paso Community College and received his certificate of completion in photo technology and an associate’s degree in media production.

Keith Van Prooyen
Media Specialist

Keith Van Prooyen is an Emmy Award-winning photojournalist who came to Northside ISD with 15 years of experience working in television newsrooms.

After graduating from Calvin College with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Van Prooyen started his career as a sports photographer for WOOD-TV in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1997, he moved to San Antonio to become a sports photographer at WOAI-TV (formerly KMOL).

At WOAI, Van Prooyen covered San Antonio’s biggest sporting events, including Sean Elliott's Memorial Day Miracle, Jay High School's improbable State Championship in 2002, all four of the San Antonio Spurs championships, and the University of Texas' 2005 National Championship, where he was nearly run over by Vince Young as he scored the game-winning touchdown.

In 2008, Van Prooyen won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Sports News - Single Story. That same year, he was promoted to chief photojournalist at WOAI and was given the responsibility for managing the station’s 15 photojournalists.

Van Prooyen joined Northside in May 2011 as a media specialist with NISD-TV. Van Prooyen shoots and edits news and feature stories for Inside Northside Video Magazine, the District’s YouTube channel, and special events.  

Van Prooyen and his wife Michelle have a son, Kameron, and a daughter, Kallie.

Marcy Slate
Department Secretary

Marcy Slate works as the Communications Department Secretary where she is responsible for fielding a multitude of calls daily about all facets of the school district. She helps handle the information flow to the general public that includes prospective employees, realtors, parents, elected officials, media reporters, and business owners.

She has worked with the Northside ISD family for 21 years. Her career with the District started at John Marshall High School in 1990, where she was an instructional assistant in the Applied Learning Environment classroom for the Special Education Department. She then became a Library Assistant at Health Careers High School. Slate was then hired in the newly created Academics Standards Department which was tasked by the School Board to develop academic standards for all the core subjects and grade levels. She joined the Communications Department in June 2000.
