Global Literacy

The English Language Arts (ELA) courses include Global Literacy: Multicultural Literature, Cross-Cultural Perspectives, and Inquiry and Discovery. Students will focus on connecting with characters in literature or with real people across the world, study how information is exchanged verbally, non-verbally, as well as face to face, and emphasize the inquiry process in the contexts of interests and future careers.

6th Grade -
Global Literacy I: Multicultural Literature

Multicultural literature enables students to gain a deeper understanding of both their own culture and the cultures of others. Connecting with characters in literature or with real people across the world provides opportunities to help us understand who we are today. Through the study of diverse cultures and backgrounds, and engaging in Gifted and Talented learning strategies such as depth and complexity, creative problem solving, and critical thinking, students will gain an awareness of the various social practices, values, and belief systems of other cultures. Students will reflect upon and critically analyze current cultural issues and develop global awareness.

Global communication can include speeches, news stories, advertisements, books and traditional print publications, and social media. Students will also engage in Gifted and Talented learning strategies such as depth and complexity, creative problem solving, and critical thinking while studying multiple perspectives and making connections that will enhance their communication and interpersonal skills.

8th Grade -
Global Literacy III: Inquiry and Discovery

Students will read and write multi-genre texts, with an emphasis on nonfiction and current events. They will also engage in the inquiry process as they explore their interests and future career options, encouraging them to develop and work toward goals for high school and beyond. This course also synthesizes the learning from the prerequisite courses in 6th and 7th grades as a diverse foundation for further discovery. Through Inquiry-based instruction, teachers will guide students to explore their individual interests and future pursuits in our global society.
