Career Investigations

In this lab and project-based course, students will participate in experiences that model real world industries with a focus on Global Communications, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology. This course establishes the foundation for the Cybersecurity pathway of courses. The goal is to create a pathway for success in high school, future studies, and careers in Global Communications, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology. All Career and Technical Education clusters will be addressed so students have a well-rounded view of all career clusters. The students will research labor market information, learn job-seeking skills, and practice professional communication skills. Major units on Global Communications, Cybersecurity, and Information Technology will be the focus of this course. Career and Technical Education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions.

Leadership Investigations

Students will become familiar with different ways of exercising leadership in their lives. They will learn and apply leadership skills in a hands-on practical way that encourages them to challenge their own beliefs and assumptions about what constitutes leadership. This course offers a comprehensive review of contemporary issues and perspectives on leadership. Topics include development of leadership theories, personal assessment and development, values and goals, motivation, followership, group dynamics, multiculturalism in leadership, conflict resolution, performance excellence, and the change process. This course is based on the premise that each student will face a variety of leadership challenges in life. How these challenges are met, whether as a formal leader or a member of a team, can have a significant impact on an organization and on one's life.

Principals of Informational Technology

Students will develop computer literacy skills which will enable them to adapt to emerging technologies used in the global marketplace and the field of cybersecurity. Students will implement personal and interpersonal skills to prepare for a rapidly evolving workplace environment, specifically in cybersecurity. Units exploring the challenges facing information security professionals related to ethics, system security, network security, and application security will be presented. Students will enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the global information technology environment.

Fundamentals of Computer Science

Students will learn about the computing tools that are used every day. Students will foster their creativity and innovation through opportunities to design, implement, and present solutions to real-world problems with a special focus on cybersecurity.. Students will collaborate and use computer science concepts to access, analyze, and evaluate information needed to solve problems. Students will learn the problem-solving and reasoning skills that are the foundation of computer science. By using computer science knowledge and skills that support the work of individuals and groups in solving problems, students will select the technology appropriate for the task, synthesize knowledge, create solutions, and evaluate the results. Students will learn digital citizenship by researching current laws and regulations and by practicing integrity and respect. Students will gain an understanding of the principles of computer science through the study of technology operations and concepts.

Future Investigations A

The course focuses on the skills and strategies necessary for students to make a successful transition into high school and an academic career. Students will explore the options available in high school, higher education, and the professional world in order to establish both immediate and long-range personal goals. After identifying their individual learning styles and abilities, students will build on these abilities by developing critical time-management, organization and study skills. The course focuses on self understanding, decision-making, resiliency, attitude, character education, and leadership to help students maximize personal achievement. Students will develop the specific strategies necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals  

 

8th Grade - 
Future Investigations B

This course blends written, oral, and graphic communication in a career-based environment. Careers in the global economy require individuals to be creative and have a strong background in computer and technology applications, a strong and solid academic foundation, and a proficiency in professional oral and written communication. Within this context, students will be expected to develop and expand the ability to write, read, edit, speak, listen, apply software applications, manipulate computer graphics, and conduct Internet research.
