Welcome to the Howsman Library website!

What does the librarian do?

First and foremost, I am a teacher!  I see every class in the school once every 7 school days. Students in PreK-2nd come to the library for a 30-minute visit, and students in 3rd-5th have a 45-minute visit.  During library time, I teach lessons that support the English Language Arts, Social Studies, or library curriculum, and then students spend the last 10 minutes of their visit checking out books.

I manage a collection of over 10,000 books.  This involves:

  • circulation of around 2,000 books a month
  • shelving
  • book repair
  • weeding of damaged and outdated books
  • reading reviews and ordering new books
  • stamping and labeling new books

In addition to my library duties, I serve as the campus Social Studies Facilitator, and I am the Chess Club sponsor and a Project ACORN Garden Club co-sponsor.

Checkout Policies

Students in PreK check out 1 book.

Students in kindergarten check out 2 books.

Students in 1st-5th grades check out 3 books.

*Students in 1st-5th who have a book more than 2 months overdue may be limited to 2 books.

If a student misses their library day, they may come check out before school or ask their teacher to send them during open checkout times during the school day.

Parents may check out before school, too!  See Mrs. Park to create an account.

Maker Morning

Once a week, students in kinder-5th can come to the library before school to build, create, and play. Maker Morning is open to the first 35 students from 7:15 to 7:40 on the following days:

Tuesdays: 4th and 5th grades

Wednesdays: 2nd and 3rd grades

Thursdays: 1st grade

Fridays: kindergarten

Maker Morning will not take place on days that special events are held in the library, such as Book Fair or Family Day to Read.

Chess Club

Chess Club is held in the spring semester for students in 4th and 5th grades.

Our meetings are held on Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m to 4:15 p.m.

Currently, our chess club is full, and we have students on a waiting list.

Librarian Information

My name is Mrs. Park, and I have been the Howsman Librarian since the fall of 2007.  Prior to that, I taught secondary English and Reading for 6 years.   I love to read, study languages, travel, spend time with my family, and work on my garden.

I love Howsman, and I love working with our students in the library!
