Art

Art 1 is designed to provide a foundation for advanced courses and satisfies the ART GRADUATION REQUIREMENT. Emphasis is placed on understanding the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as a basis for composition. Students will explore a variety of artists, art processes and materials such as drawing, painting, printmaking, two & three-dimensional design, and digital art. Student artwork will reflect the aesthetics & cultural and historical contexts. Willingness to get involved in the creative process is a more important requirement than the student’s talent or previous experience.

These courses provide an opportunity for students to expand on the previous concepts introduced in Art 1. Emphasis is placed on experiences with design principles, the elements of art, drawing techniques and painting skills leading to the development of abilities that are necessary for advanced art courses. Students are given more in-depth problems to solve creatively while becoming more adept through a broad exposure to various media. 

Prerequisite: Art I

These courses provide an opportunity for students to expand on the previous concepts introduced in Art 2. Emphasis is placed on experiences with design principles, the elements of art, drawing techniques and painting skills leading to the development of abilities that are necessary for Advanced Placement courses. Students are given more in-depth problems to solve creatively while becoming more adept through a broad exposure to various media. Art 3 stresses technique and craft with each project.

Prerequisite: Art II

This course is designed for the student who wishes to further develop skills and techniques that were introduced in previous art courses. Specifically focused on the mark-making within the drawing media, this course focuses on special techniques with each drawing medium. This a desirable course for any student wishing to develop a portfolio for college. It is expected for any student intending to enroll in Advanced Placement Art to successfully complete this course but is not required. Students will be continually encouraged to expand their creative ideas as well as their technical potential. The course will approach drawing as a fundamental component of expression.

Prerequisite: Art II

This course is designed for the student who wishes to further develop skills and techniques specific to drawing media. Specifically focused on the mark-making within drawing media, this course pushes the boundaries of technical expression. This is a desirable course for any student wishing to develop a portfolio for college.

It is expected for any student intending to enroll in Advanced Placement Art to successfully complete this course but is not required. Students will be continually encouraged to expand their creative ideas as well as their technical potential. The course will approach drawing utilizing various techniques and papers specific to drawing while paying close attention to concept, craft, and technical prowess.

Prerequisite: Art III or Drawing III

Students will be continually encouraged to expand their creative ideas as well as their technical potential. The course will approach painting utilizing various techniques and materials. This course will focus on the technical application of paint and composition.

This course is offered to the advanced art student. The 2D Design AP Portfolio focuses on the elements and principles of design with the widest range of material used. It is the equivalent to a one-semester college course in art and culminates in the Advanced Placement Examination. Depending on student's performance on this exam and on college's policies, Advanced Placement college credit may be received. An additional College Board exam fee is required from applicants.

A well-presented digital portfolio of 15 works with a “sustained investigation” theme and 5 physical artworks showcasing technical prowess is to be sent in as a requirement for submission. This course demands students to be self-motivated in producing concept-driven work that is technically in-depth. Students have required to set-up their digital portfolio and submit in addition to preparing their artwork for shipment.

Prerequisite: Basic Art courses and portfolio

The course will also approach drawing skills as used in 3-dimensional art.

This course is designed for the student who wishes to further develop skills and techniques that were introduced in previous art courses. Specifically focused on sculpture methods within 3D media. This is a desirable course for any student wishing to develop a portfolio for college.

It is expected for any student intending to enroll in Advanced Placement Art to successfully complete this course, but is not required. Students will be continually encouraged to expand their creative ideas as well as their technical potential in the area of 3D space and form. The course will also approach drawing skills as used in 3-dimensional art.

Band

This course is designed for students who are learning to play a band instrument for the first time OR for students that are in the early stages of learning to play an instrument. Little or no prior experience is required for this course. Campus band director will assess student skill ability for this class. Basic music fundamentals include tone, rhythm, and technique development. Students are eligible to participate in campus concert performances and UIL performance assessments and will perform music literature from various music genres. Enrollment in this course constitutes some agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements.

This course is designed for students to develop a mastery level for playing a band instrument acquired from previous courses of study. Students will acquire advanced skills needed to perform very complex music literature. Students will develop strong leadership skills, evoke high levels of expression, and perform literature of all genres and ensemble instrumentation. This course includes development of skills applied to indoor concerts as well as the fall seasonal marching band performances. Minimum of 4 hours weekly outside the school day are required for rehearsals to adequately address performance requirements for the course. UIL performance assessments and student eligibility for Texas All-State Ensembles are included in this course work. Scholarship opportunities are numerable. Enrollment in this course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements.

This course is designed as an enrichment opportunity for students to apply instrumental music skills to the jazz medium. Students will study jazz history, learn to improvise, and perform jazz literature of all styles. With the exception of rhythm section instruments required for the jazz course (piano, bass, rhythm guitar, and trapset), all students must be a concurrent member of the Prep, Con-cert, or Symphonic Band. Sound music fundamentals are a prerequisite for success in this course. Texas All-State Ensembles and large scholarship opportunities are included in this course work. Students will perform extensively in public venues. Enrollment in this course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements.

Choir

This course develops skills in proper vocal production and music reading. Students learn to improve their singing voice, sight-reading and ensemble skills through performance participation. Choral literature will include all genres of vocal music written for the treble voice. Each level of this course, will build on the foundation of the previous course. Students will develop in confidence and collaborative skills through performance opportunities in solo, small and larger vocal ensembles. Enrollment in this course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular requirements.

Instructor: Leslie Paleo

This course develops the most advanced treble musicians and gives students the opportunity to improve their skills in vocal production, sight-reading, and ensemble participation. Choral literature will include secular and sacred music from all times and periods of music in the treble range. Enrollment in this course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular requirements.

Prerequisite: Audition

This course develops skills in proper vocal production and music reading. Students learn to improve their singing voice, sight-reading, and ensemble skills through performance participation. This course develops the most advanced choral musicians and gives students the opportunity to improve their skills in vocal production, sight-reading, and ensemble participation. Choral literature will include secular and sacred music from all times and periods of music for all vocal ranges. Enrollment in this course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular requirements.

This course develops additional skills of advanced students with strong music fundamentals. Students will explore non-traditional ensemble techniques and literature of all styles. Size and composition of each group is designed to meet the requirements of the music being studied. Ensembles will consist of madrigals, vocal jazz, show choirs and other contemporary music genres.

Music Theory

This series of courses are designed for students interested in developing music notation writing skills and composition skills. Students will develop an understanding of basic music theory construction of melodic and harmonic lines of music as well as chord construction. Each course builds upon skills developed in previous courses. Students analyze and compose lines of music. Piano keyboard skills are used for theory applications. Applied Music Theory is offered on campuses where a certified AP Music Theory Instructor is available. Students completing Music Theory I are eligible for AP Music Theory OR music instructors can recommend students with strong music backgrounds for AP Music Theory without completion of prior Music Theory courses. Student compositions are performed by various ensembles. Scholarship awards are available for recognized compositions. Students are eligible to acquire college credit through the College Board AP Music Theory Exam process.

Orchestra

This course is designed for students who are learning to play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) for the first time OR for students that are in the early stages of learning to play an instrument. Little or no prior experience is required for this course. Campus orchestra director will assess student skill ability for this class. Basic music fundamentals include tone, rhythm, and technique development. Students are eligible to participate in campus concert performances and UIL performance assessments and will perform music literature from various music genres. Enrollment in this course constitutes some agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements.

Instructor: Teresa Nguyen

This series of courses are designed for students interested in developing extensive detailed performance applications on a specific music instrument. Students work independently at their own pace, in small ensemble settings of unique instrumentation (i.e. brass choirs, woodwind choirs, etc) and apply skills developed in concert, recital, and other various performance venues. Student audio portfolios are created, university audition recitals are developed, and audition preparations for Texas all-state are all part of the curriculum. In addition, students desiring to learn to play more than one instrument can be enrolled in this class for individualized instruction. Each course builds upon the student’s skill level developed in previous courses of study.

Technical Theatre

This course introduces and provides experience in all aspects of technical theatre. Students study basic principles of lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, publicity and design aspects for all fields. Additionally, students gain a working knowledge of technical theatre history. Special emphasis is placed on technical theatre vocabulary and codes of backstage conduct. Students will focus on design, creation, and production of show aspects derived from script analysis.

This course focuses on specializing in fields of technical theatre. Students will focus on actualizing student productions including fine arts musical, 2 main stage shows and UIL One-Act. Students will also take part in Theatrical Design contest. Classwork focuses on scenic study (including lighting, sound, props, costumes, and publicity). 

Prerequisite: Technical Theatre I

Instructor: Joseph Lopez

This course focuses on specializing in fields of technical theatre. Students will focus on actualizing student productions including fine arts musical, 2 main stage shows and UIL One-Act. Students will also take part in Theatrical Design contest. Classwork focuses on scenic study (including lighting, sound, props, costumes, and publicity). 

This course integrates technical theatre skills for the career-oriented student featuring an extensive amount of work in play productions. Students attend theatrical seminars, lead student crews in construction, lighting, sound, and props for main stage productions. 

Prerequisite: Technical Theatre II

Instructor: Joseph Lopez

This course focuses on specializing in fields of technical theatre. Students will focus on actualizing student productions including fine arts musical, 2 main stage shows and UIL One-Act. Students will also take part in Theatrical Design contest. Classwork focuses on Technical theatre study (including lighting, sound, props, costumes, and publicity). 

This advanced-level course is designed to prepare the serious theatre student for life in the theatre beyond the high school arena. Through a rigorous series of creative projects, the student is challenged to work as a student designer, student technical director. Students teach basic technical theater techniques to their peers. From time to time, students are required to work outside of class on the mainstage and other theatrical productions.

Prerequisite: Technical Theatre III

Theatre Arts

This course introduces and provides experience in all aspects of theatre arts. Students study basic principles of acting including character analysis, textual interpretation, voice, movement, collaboration, improvisation, and critical analysis of performance. Additionally, students gain a working knowledge of theatre history and the multiple forms of theatrical performance, as well as the technical aspects of theater and theatrical design. Special emphasis is placed on theatrical vocabulary and codes of conduct, as well as the creation, production, direction of monologues and scenes.

This course focuses on styles of acting and performance and theatrical Production. Classwork focuses on scene study (including research, direction, stage management, character analysis, setting analysis, and design) and monologues from various theatrical eras and genres. 

Prerequisite: Theatre Arts I

Instructor: Kyle Andrews

This course provides critical and theoretical opportunities for the student of theatre. Students focus on production elements including directing skills, playwriting, and stage management as well as acting techniques. This course integrates theatre skills for the career-oriented student featuring an extensive amount of work in play/script analysis and the evolution of theatrical art, as well as the study of advanced acting techniques, character analysis, and auditioning methods. Students attend drama seminars, direct portions of a full-length play, study, explore and finally present a lesson on the historical and cultural context of theatre for a specific period.

Prerequisite: Theatre II

This advanced-level course is designed to prepare the serious theatre student for life in the theatre beyond the high school arena. Through a rigorous series of creative projects, the student is challenged to work as an actor, a director, a theater technician, and a drama teacher. Students study advanced principles of acting and character analysis. Students teach theater etiquette to their peers, serve as a casting director during an audition process, and are expected to lead improvisations, exercises, and class discussions. From time to time, students are required to work outside of class.

This class focuses on developing your singing/acting/movement skills in a variety of musical theatre performing styles. The class forms an ensemble performing group that learns and performs songs from a variety of musicals, from Vaudeville to today's Broadway shows.
