One of the great things we like to do for our students is show them what happens outside the walls of our campus. Many of our supportive business partners, like Joeris in this instance, provide us with the opportunities of taking the students out into the field. This day, the carpentry strand students got to see a job site at Churchill High School. It began with a safety breifing and job detail and then the tour. Click for more pictures of the morning.

The Principal's Cabinet is CCA's student leadership and advisory team. The team consists of students from all grade levels and strands. Each year they go to Newcomb Ranch to participate in team building and personal challenge activities. Students were faced with a number of challenging activities that prove to test their ability to work together as a team and challenged their skills as a campus leader.

CPS Energy is looking to fill these boots! They came to Construction Careers Academy to give some great demos and spoke about working with the company. Last summer they hired four of our students as interns and are looking for a few of our great kids again for this year coming up. Many of our students are in the Department of Labor Apprenticeship program, working towards their Journeyman's license in electrical, plumbing or carpentry, making them hireable at 16 years old! More pictures of the event.

Last summer Zachry Construction Corporation hired several of our students. Some were recent graduates, and some are still going to CCA this year. They had a variety of positions from working with drones, to working on bridges, to land surveying, to estimating. Zachry, like many construction companies large and small is feeling the labor shortage crunch whether it be skilled craft workers or construction professionals. We are happy to be working with our business partners and seeing our students receive amazing job opportuities and learning experiences.

Some of our Construction Careers Academy students recently had the opportunity to visit two local universities. Sophomores from the Architecture strand were invited to visit the University of the Incarnate Word campus. They visited the School of Interior Design and got to tour the campus. Another group of girls involved with the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) had a conference at San Antonio's Texas A&M University. After the business conference, where they learned strategies of creating a business plan, they also toured the growing campus (picture here). One of their favorite stops was the dorm rooms where they imagined themselves living on campus!

Construction Careers Academy is in demand! As a result, we have grown out of our space. Recently we were approved to build a large storage shed to help house materials and equipment to free up shop space. What is exciting is that our students will have the opportunity to join in on this real world process. NISD's own Leroy San Miguel, Assistant Superintendent for Facilities & Operations, held the shed project kick-off meeting and welcomed our students to attend. Students had the opportunity to openly participate in the meeting, give input and ask questions of the project architect, project manager, and of Mr. San Miguel. As the project proceeds, other students will actively engage in the construction project as it relates to their field of study.

From learning how to construct Domes and Tunnels, to protecting precious cargo, to cleaning out your drawers, Mr. Gallets Engineering students have hit this year running! Our engineers learn about loads, structures and forms of energy in the class and then take it out in the shop for practical hands on modeling and applications.
