Some of our Construction Careers Academy students recently had the opportunity to visit two local universities. Sophomores from the Architecture strand were invited to visit the University of the Incarnate Word campus. They visited the School of Interior Design and got to tour the campus. Another group of girls involved with the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) had a conference at San Antonio's Texas A&M University. After the business conference, where they learned strategies of creating a business plan, they also toured the growing campus (picture here). One of their favorite stops was the dorm rooms where they imagined themselves living on campus!

Construction Careers Academy is in demand! As a result, we have grown out of our space. Recently we were approved to build a large storage shed to help house materials and equipment to free up shop space. What is exciting is that our students will have the opportunity to join in on this real world process. NISD's own Leroy San Miguel, Assistant Superintendent for Facilities & Operations, held the shed project kick-off meeting and welcomed our students to attend. Students had the opportunity to openly participate in the meeting, give input and ask questions of the project architect, project manager, and of Mr. San Miguel. As the project proceeds, other students will actively engage in the construction project as it relates to their field of study.

From learning how to construct Domes and Tunnels, to protecting precious cargo, to cleaning out your drawers, Mr. Gallets Engineering students have hit this year running! Our engineers learn about loads, structures and forms of energy in the class and then take it out in the shop for practical hands on modeling and applications. For more pictures of the hands on learning and fun please click here.

Staff and students were invited to a luncheon at the beautiful Crystal Room at the Old San Francisco Steak house to talk about how CCA has impacted them. Recently CCA received an ImpactSA grant. The grant is helping to improve our welding program, sponsor student industry certifications, and sponsor a tiny home and more. The students revealed the ImpactSA Tiny Home plans and the ImpactSA banner that will go on the home for events was revealed. The ladies of ImpactSA were very excited about the program and seeing the difference that their collective dollars have made to our students and the skills they are learning. More pictures of the event here.

Construction Careers Acadamy was honored to host a visit from U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. As one of the only Department of Labor Full Apprenticeship high schools, CCA has been working closely with the DOL so that our students can earn apprenticeship hours towards their Journeyman license. The Secretary took a tour of the campus, spoke to current and former students, and business partners who employ CCA students as well as NISD board members and staff. Secretary Acosta heard about the impact CCA has had both personally and professionally. See pictures of the Secretary's visit here.

The Tailgater Tiny Home draws a crowd at this Fall's Home and Garden Show in the Alamodome. Guests of the event stood in line to see the student-built project and were in awe of the abilities of the students' work. Our student ambassadors did a great job representating their school and themselves as they told show-goers about the program and the process of the build. Many times we hear the same thing, "I wish there was a program like this when I was in school", or "We need more schools like this"! CCA is a model campus for districts around the state who come to visit our campus to see how our program works. See more pictures here.

One of our 2019 Tiny Homes went out on display for an HEB Corporate event in the San Marcus Convention Center. HEB is one of our supporting partners and each year they invite our house to serve as a backdrop and stage for their annual Christmas vendor event.

The Tailgater Tiny Home went out on its first trip of the school year to a contractors barbeque sponsored by Hart Lumber and Airtron. The house got a lot of attention from contractors and vendors; and great new connections with possible new partnerships were made. The students do a great job talking about our program and their involvement in the construction process to everyone who comes by. CCA will take the home out to several events this year as we build new partnerships and foster existing ones with the community. See more pics here.
