World Languages at Northside ISD:

American Sign Language (ASL), French, German, Latin, Spanish

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English (TEKS for LOTE) is the foundation of all Northside ISD World Languages curriculum. The World Languages offered in Northside ISD are French, German, Latin (select campuses), Spanish, and ASL (offered at Marshall HS and Taft HS only).

Since the teaching of all modern languages is similar, the following descriptions apply to each level of each language. French, German, and Spanish courses consistently use the three modes of communication: Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational. Via the practice of the three modes of communication, the following skills will be refined; speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Latin is a classical language where great emphasis is placed on the skill of reading. ASL is a performance-based language where the focus is on signaling skills in authentic, real-world situations.

Students will have the opportunity to enroll in several language courses from I - VI and may take on-level, Advanced, and/or Advanced Placement.

French/Le Francais

Presentations on French

Why French?

  • French is spoken in over 43 countries in the world and is the official language of 33 countries
  • Speaking a new language helps you to get to know and understand  another culture
  • Want to travel to France one day? Knowing the language helps immensely!
Already speak or know Spanish? French is similar in language structure, which can make it easier to learn
  • We have fun in the classroom, learning through variety of resources, including interactive games and activities

German

Willkommen zum German Club at Brandeis High School!

We gather to learn more about the German culture by listening to current music, watch German movies, make traditional German crafts while we indulge in German drinks and snacks such as “Mezzo Mix”, “Apfelsaftschorle” and the obligatory “Gummibärchen” or Nutella on toast as well as select seasonal treats (think Lebkuchen und Christstollen).

We sometimes play frisbee, other times we play German board games, but no matter what we do, we are determined to have fun!

We participate in a German soccer league contest, called “Bundesliga Total” (think Fantasy Football) where we compete against other German club teams across the nation.

Moreover, we prepare for Sprachfest, the regional German language and culture contest and club members are encouraged to participate. We have a proven track record of wins (we have trophies in our trophy case!)

Our club is all inclusive and we pride ourselves in being a safe environment where everyone can freely enjoy each other’s company. Our club is very informal, students may attend if they have time and if they have other commitments, we totally understand!

We hope to see you at our Club meeting!

German Club meets once a month.

Bis dann!

National Honor Society for High School Students of German (Delta Epsilon Phi)

Delta Epsilon Phi (ΔΕΦ) National Honor Society for High School Students of German recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of learners of German. The organization was founded in 1968 by Käthe Wilson at Coral Gables High School (FL), a devoted AATG member, to reward scholastic achievement in the study of German and to promote interest in the study of German language, literature, and civilization.

Brandeis has an active chapter, Texas Upsilon

Students are eligible to be inducted after three semesters of taking German if they meet eligibility requirements.

Being inducted into the German National Honor Society shows that a student has shown dedication and passion for the German language and culture and has excelled in their language studies.

Members become ambassadors of the German language and culture and are dedicated to promoting the German program at Brandeis.

Members meet once a marking period. We do engage in community service.

Our induction ceremony is held once a year in the Spring.

Members set themselves apart from other applicants on college and university applications.

Visit the national AATG website for info on scholarships and programs available to members.

Presentations on Latin

What can Latin do for you?

  • Teach you how to actively read
  • Enrich your vocabulary and teach you not just what words mean, but als why they mean it
  • Give you a better understanding of your own language. Many students have said that they learn more about English in Latin class than they do in their English class!
  • Impress your friends, family, and, most importantly, the universities you want to apply to.
  • Learn about the life and times of the Ancient Roman who help form Western civilization.

Spanish

Spanish offers dual credit and two AP courses.
