John Jay---JJSEA Martin-related Student Projects

All Freshman the John Jay Science and Engineering Academy magnet school are required to complete an indepenendent science project. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are strongly encouraged to do so.

In recent years three projects have been completed that pertain to data collected from our colony or from the nesting gourds themselves. Presented here are Powerpoint presentations and printed reports composed and entered by our students in regional competition.

Topic: Which Gourd Type Do Purple Martins Prefer?

(Spring 2004). Based upon 2003 data, compares gourd occupancy rates and nesting success observed in Carrol and Natureline Gourds.

Topic: Nesting Preference and Success of Purple Martins

(Spring 2005). Based upon 2002-2004 data, compares gourd occupancy rates and nesting success observed in Big Bo, Natureline and Supergourd gourds ('04). Also compares timing of the breeding cycle, brood size and fledging rates between years.

Topic: Factors Affecting the Internal Temperatures of Purple Martin Gourds

(Spring 2005) based upon data collected in the fall of '04. Temperatures within four different gourd types were recorded and compared. The range of temperatures within a single gourd at different heights above the floor were measured. The effects of gourd entrance direction and the influence of wind speed and cloud cover on internal gourd temperatures was investigated.
