INW: The Inside Scoop

November 26, 2013

Fourth grade students at Carlos Coon ES presented a musical program at their November PTA meeting called “At the Hop,” featuring songs of the 1950s. They also had an art project coinciding with that special presentation, including some two-dimensional images of Elvis Presley, as well as 3D items such as ice cream floats and plates of burgers and fries. The art work was under the guidance of Susan Jackson, art teacher.

Throughout the month of October, students and staff at Lewis ES raised more than $2,000 by selling t-shirts and collecting change for their “C is for Cure” fundraising drive benefitting the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The NISD ALPHA program held its sixth annual Bowling Extravaganza at Bandera Bowl with proceeds benefitting all grade levels of the GT programs with a portion going to the NEF iGniTe Fund established to help GT Programs with local grants.

Community involvement is vital to all students, whether they have special needs or not. Students at the Reddix Center are exploring different ways to be connected in and out of school by partnering with businesses to build employment skills, and by volunteering with meals on wheels.

Kyle Kuenemann, Construction Technology Instructor at Stevens HS, decided a few months ago that many of his students needed a glimpse of what it was really like to work in the construction industry. He contacted other Northside construction instructors, and friends in the construction industry, to form a committee to gain their input for a Construction Career Day.

The Musical Theatre Department at Brennan HS was invited to attend a special rehearsal for Diana Ross at the Majestic Theatre.

Duo Xu, student at Clark HS, is this year’s recipient of the 2013 District 20 Congressional Art Award. Her first place oil painting titled “Curiosity,” will hang in the U.S. Capitol with other Congressional winners for a period of one year. She and a parent will be flown to Washington, D.C. for the reception in early June, and will receive a cash prize of $2,000.

Students from the Jay Science and Engineering Academy recently met with State Senator Leticia Van de Putte in Austin. The students are part of the ACE Mentor Program of Greater San Antonio which introduces high school students to architecture, construction and engineering.

Holidays are very special at Villarreal ES and Christmas time is no exception. Students and staff wore various items each day, depending on the theme of Christmas socks, ugly sweaters, head gear, or jingle bells.

Bud Wainscott, a permanent substitute at Stevens HS, recently published two children’s books – The Candy Well and The Wounded Hawk, which are available on Amazon. Both books are illustrated by 2012 Stevens graduate Regina Puente.
