High School Health Scope and Sequence

Health Education is a critical component of the overall education of all students in Northside ISD. In Northside ISD, Health Education is part of the Whole Child Development Department focused on fulfilling the mission that every day, in every classroom, every student grows in confidence, curiosity and capability. Northside ISD offers a quality health education program that provides learning opportunities that are meaningful, motivational and challenging.

Instructional Timeline and Resources

In accordance, and in compliance, with the Texas Education Code and Board Policy EHAA(LOCAL), Northside Independent School District provides human development instruction and anti-victimization instruction as part of its curriculum in high school Health Education. The district is confident the information presented to students on this topic is age and grade-level appropriate; however parents have the right to view the curriculum and/or remove their child from this instruction. The opt-in consent form will be sent out by each campus. Information about the curriculum materials to support human development and conflict, violence, and abuse instruction is included below along with the instructional timeline.

Consent: If we do not receive your signed consent on or before the instruction is scheduled to begin, or you indicate that you do not consent, your child will not receive human sexuality and/or anti-victimization instruction. Instead, your child will participate in an alternative instructional activity and will not be subject to disciplinary action, academic penalty or other sanction. If you believe the District has violated Texas Education Code Section 28.004(q-5), you may file a grievance complaint with the District pursuant to Board Policy FNG(Local).

Background Information

Original information for this Unit derived from NISD’s collaboration with the PTAs.
In 2005, Holt’s Life Time Health was adopted by NISD, supported by the NISD Health and PE Department.
In 2015, Sexuality and Responsibility Unit was enhanced and updated by the Health and PE Department.

Policy, TEKS and Guidelines

As per House Bill 1525, parents/guardians must give active consent to have their student participate. Parents/guardians have an option for their child to participate or to not participate in the Sexuality Education Unit.
Curriculum is abstinence focused – abstinence is primarily promoted as the best option to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy.
Condoms and various other contraceptives are introduced (TEK 115.32 7.I), but not brought into the classroom.
Teachers have been trained and provided with guidelines to appropriately and accurately answer common student generated questions.
Most questions asked by a student can be answered. Answers are based on medical definitions and medical accuracy.
Sensitivity needs to be observed when responding.
Teachers are not to give their opinions, be judgmental, nor self-disclose.

Parenting and Paternity Awareness

Parenting and Paternity Awareness (p.a.p.a.) is an evidence-based, educational curriculum designed for young adults. It teaches them the benefits of waiting to become a parent until after they have completed their education, started a career, and are in a stable, committed relationship.

The p.a.p.a. program is a way school districts can comply with state law requiring high-school health to include a parenting and paternity awareness curriculum.
