The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) gives students who are classified as English Learners (EL) the opportunity to receive services that support their English language acquisition. Students will be placed in courses according to their English language proficiency. The English intensive instruction is designed with the goals to improve studentsโ English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. ESL teachers employ best teaching practices and approaches based on the current research in English language acquisition. The ESL program objective is to develop competence in English while valuing the academic and cultural experience of the student.
Brandeis High School is the home to hundreds of English Language Learners with dozens of different languages represented. Our department is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of English proficiency have the opportunity to develop their language skills and achieve success in and out of the classroom.
Courses offered include English Language Development and Acquisition (ELDA), English I for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL 1), English II for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL II), and Reading for Speakers of Other Languages. Support is provided in the four core subjects of English, history, mathematics, and science.
Many students decide to pursue higher learning while others decide to enter the workforce. Our goal is to prepare them for the path they embark on by giving the skills necessary to succeed focusing on their spoken and written communication. We pride ourselves in welcoming our students and having them involved in the Brandeis community. Go EB Broncos!
