The NISD High School English Language Arts Department encourages the curiosity and critical thinking skills of all students by providing diverse, relevant, and interactive learning experiences in alignment with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. We facilitate engaging, learner-centered instruction by providing a challenging curriculum and ongoing professional development on best evidence-based literacy practices, all designed to magnify the learning experience through sustained opportunities for writing, reading, and collaborative student talk. Through these targeted areas, we prepare high school students for postsecondary success in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

NISD Students & Teacher

The Brandeis English Language Arts (ELA) Department provides its students with daily opportunities to participate in critical thinking, meaningful writing, and engaging conversations. Our advanced courses for underclassmen and our Advanced Placement (AP) for upperclassmen consistently turn out the highest AP Exam scores for comprehensive high schools in the district, and the courses are taught by College Board AP Readers who bring a wealth of expertise, knowledge, and experience to their students. In addition to our standard coursework, we also offer a Writing Center where students can get help from peers and others can flex their writing know-how to help fellow students. We also offer a Creative Writing classโ€”complete with a Creative Writing clubโ€”and a Film Studies class that turn out amazing products during their respective semesters.

Beyond academics, the English Department faculty cares deeply about supporting and nurturing the whole child, and we work diligently to ensure that students not only feel challenged academically but also encouraged personally.
