Bond with your kids at Story Time through Ritual, Music, and Movement (PreK-5th and Special Ed)
Story Time is a crucial and essential part of the elementary school teacher's and librarian's day. You are modeling fluent and expressive reading for pre-literate and early readers, as well as introducing them to quality literature. Just as importantly, you are establishing a powerful relationship with children that will deepen and grow as they move on to the upper elementary grades. Through personalized ritual, as well as music and movement, the child comes to equate books and reading with acceptance and love. The presenter will demonstrate the basic structure of the Story Time experience at Westwood Terrace Elementary, introduce participants to the theory and work of child development expert/musician Jim Gill, and invite participants to partake in some music-and-movement fun. Come discover that mindfulness isn't just another trend or buzzword. Come learn about this practice with roots spanning thousands of years. In this hour and half retreat, we will bypass the jargon and hype associated with mindfulness to actually practice how to be present in your classroom and life with resilience and the capacity for calm. Mindfulness practice has been shown to help us and our students be present to the calm and joy in each and every moment of our lives. Relevant studies and findings from neuroscience and how they both support and inspire this practice will be shared.
