Strategies for Building Academic Vocabulary
Participants will engage in researched-based vocabulary practices and discover the context of leveraging the components of vocabulary to enhance instruction. Participants will explore the three tiers of vocabulary development from basic recall to application processing. The strategies can be used across grade level to access academic and process vocabulary.

Having difficulty getting science content to stick in your students' brains? Learn the parts of the brain needed for long-term learning and examine how students take in information. Participants will also explore how to present "hard to teach" science concepts in multiple modalities and leave with ready to use engagement strategies to increase student achievement.

Participants will explore the human body system through problem-based learning. Students will practice creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration to understand the functions of the body systems and how they work to maintain homeostasis.

Participants will learn how to utilize a variety of different hyperspaces to differentiate instruction and provide students the opportunity to collaborate, think critically and be creative. Leverage the power of tech tools such as Google Earth, Google MyMaps, Google Tours, and BrainPop to give students choice & keep them engaged from bell to bell! Bring your iPad, Chromebook, materials for an upcoming lesson, and get ready for a learning adventure.

Explore the Claim, Evidence and Reasoning (CER) Framework and how it can be used to enhance students' to speak and write scientific explanation in the science classroom. Participants will experience, and walk away with, knowledge and skills on how to apply the CER Framework to laboratory investigations as well as assessments while scaffolding for students.

Leveraging Vernier to Enhance Data Analysis
Learn how to utilize Vernier LabQuests and probes for data collection and analysis. Participants will access the lab tools section of the digital resources sites to practice signature labs for all grade levels, as well as helpful hints for equipment management and upkeep.

New Teacher Academy - August 13th


Middle School Science Content
New NISD middle school science teachers will investigate the course standards, scope and sequence, student expectations, course laboratory components, assessment schedule, and teacher resources for Grades 6, 7, and 8 Science. Teachers will also experience a brief introduction to the online, district required safety training. This session is also open to any NISD teacher that was a late hire or is new to the content.
