QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT BAND AT STINSON MIDDLE SCHOOL
DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO READ MUSIC TO JOIN THE BAND?
Any training in music that you might have will be helpful, but everything you need to know to play an instrument will be taught in band.
CAN BAND STUDENTS BE IN SPORTS, CHEERLEADING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES?
YES! We encourage our band members to participate in athletics and other school activities. Many of our band members are the star athletes of our school as well as academic leaders!
WHO WILL BE IN THE BAND?
Your friends and fellow classmates will join you in what will be some of the most exciting times of your school days. Band students are among the leaders in academic achievement, school spirit, and club activities.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING BAND?
The most obvious is learning how to play an instrument for your own pleasure. Other advantages include: playing in concerts, competing in band contests, winning medals, going to band camp, taking trips, parties, and the opportunity of later playing in one of the top high school bands in the state of Texas!
HOW DO I CHOOSE AN INSTRUMENT TO PLAY?
At Stinson, beginning band students play the following instruments:
WOODWIND BRASS PERCUSSION
Flute Trumpet Snare Drum
Clarinet French Horn Bells
Alto Saxophone Trombone (both instruments are taught every day)
Once you select band as your elective choice, visit the Stinson website for the appointment link, or
call 210-397-3673 to make an instrument selection appointment. At the appointment, we will custom fit you to the instrument that you make the best initial sounds on!
If you are interested in percussion, there is a tryout that occurs at your appointment time. Due to the popularity of that instrument, percussion is the only instrument that requires a “try-out”. All students who try-out for percussion will also select a second instrument choice.
All other instruments are filled up on a first-come, first-serve basis. Because of your physical characteristics, you will progress faster on some instruments than others. Usually the best one is the one that you make the best initial sounds on and most want to play. We will point you towards the best instrument choice during your appointment.
DOES IT COST A LOT OF MONEY TO BE IN THE BAND?
The main cost is your instrument. Good new and used instruments are available from the local music stores. Most families rent an instrument on a rental-purchase plan at a low monthly cost. The school district also rents the bigger (trombone, tuba, baritone), and more expensive (French horn, oboe, bassoon) instruments to the students at a minimal cost. Please wait until your instrument selection appointment before purchasing or renting an instrument. If you have any further questions, please call or email:
