Brennan High School soccer player goes way beyond the game

Lauren Liguez, a senior at Brennan High School, is a standout player on the Bears soccer team, an Academic All-District student, class officer, National Honor Society member, student artist, and art contest winner, and is ranked number two in her class.

She is now also the recipient of the KENS5/UPS All-Star Athlete award for 2022-23.

During a live broadcast of KENS 5 Great Day SA, Liguez was honored inside the Brennan HS gym among her fellow players and classmates in a pep rally-style setting.

Coach Zoila Hurley, who nominated her for the award, wrote in the nomination, “In regards to Lauren’s character, the things that stand out to me the most are her high degree in integrity, leadership, and personal accountability.”

“When faced with challenges, she has consistently approached them with her best effort. Whether she is having to play out of position or outside her comfort zone in soccer, she is ready to give her best while demonstrating a positive approach and outlook.”

“Lauren is an A student in everything she does,” Coach Hurley said.

Liguez has made the first Team Academic All-District for the past three years, is ranked second in her class, served as junior class president and is running for senior class vice president, is a member of the National Honor Society running for NHS historian, is a VASE art competition competitor, Hispanic Recognition Award nominee, and won first place in the NISD Los Leones Art Festival as an 8th-grade student.

Beyond her athletic and academic success, Liguez also is involved in the community. She is often found at local elementary schools mentoring and reading to students. At the high school, she tutors students, is a food bank volunteer, serves as a bear and cub camp orientation leader, participates in clean-up activities on campus, and helped paint the Brennan library mural; all while still making the time to work two jobs and be a certified soccer referee.

“Lauren is a very driven person who enjoys the competition that life brings athletically and academically,” Coach Hurley said. “She has the attitude of a winner; she prepares herself to win on a daily basis on and off the field, and the fruits of those labors can be seen through her high academic marks and consistent ability to make the team better by being on the field.

Liguez’s leadership helped her soccer team win two back-to-back District championships and earn two Regional tournament appearances. “She is definitely one-of-a-kind,” Hurley added.
