Fifteen NISD seventh graders are winners of the 2017 Texas Proud Award. The award is sponsored by the Alamo Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and is an effort to keep the memory of the defenders of the Alamo alive. More than 2,100 students from across San Antonio submitted a letter written from the point of view of an Alamo defender. Letters were judged by members of the Sons of the Republic and area historians on historical accuracy and creativity.
Students were honored at a ceremony at the historic Menger Hotel. The ceremony included a walking tour of the Alamo with historical reenactors and a discussion of the Immortal 32.
Winners include Mariel Salomon, Trisha Baillon, Jillian Thomas, Abigail Newman, Meredith Alpar, Elizabeth Letch, and D’Artagnan DesOrmeaux, Briscoe MS; Crecia Limon and Jacinda Navarro, Rayburn MS; Vanessa Lemus and Bryan Echeveste, Ross MS; and Arianna Apolinar, Anna Berber, Madison Pena, and Janie Olivia, Zachry MS.
