Northside ISD is holding an Auxiliary Job Fair to fill more than 300 positions for bus drivers, food service workers, food service manager trainees, police officers, custodians, maintenance workers and Aquatics positions.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: appointment of several campus administrators including the Principals of Construction Careers Academy and Health Careers High School; and approved the use of School Bond 2010 savings to build a new elementary school and a new district competition gym.

Starting with the 2012-2013 school year, over 50,000 elementary-aged students in Northside began benefitting in a collaborative effort between the Health and Physical Education Department, Child Nutrition Department, and the Learning Tree After-School program thanks to a three-year $2.6 million Federal Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant.

You’ve probably seen the Energy Star label on household appliances like washing machines and dishwashers, but it can also apply to schools. Martin Elementary School and Warren High School are the first schools in Northside, and the first schools in a San Antonio-area school district, to earn the Energy Star label.

The Northside ISD Police Department is hiring police officers for both campus and patrol divisions. Benefits include a competitive starting salary, medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement contribution to TRS, paid training, and opportunities for advancement within the department.

The elementary menu and the middle/high schools menu for the 2013-2014 school year have been announced. Prices are $1 for breakfast and $2 for lunch at the elementary level and $1.00 for breakfast and $2.25 for lunch at the secondary level.

A new GED test series is coming January 1, 2014, and those who haven’t finished all tests under the old GED series will have to start all over again.  Incomplete or insufficient GED scores from the old 2002 series will no longer be valid after December 31, 2013.

 Two new voter-approved Northside ISD athletics facilities were officially dedicated in June- the Northside Swim Center and Tennis Center. Both facilities are available for use by the community.

Northside ISD offers free, half-day pre-kindergarten for eligible four-year-old students in their neighborhood schools. About 2,900 pre-kindergarten students are projected for the 2013-2014 school year.

Northside ISD Trustees approved an increase of $1,585 for all teachers, nurses, librarians and speech pathologists (around 7,000 employees) as well as a 3.9 percent average pay raise for all other employees effective the new school year.

Northside ISD will add 777 new positions for the 2013-2014 school year after Trustees approved both a Growth and Improvement budget and a Restoration Funds budget that will restore some of the education funding cuts made by the state two years ago. Additionally, the restored funds will allow for a reduction in class sizes.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: appointment of several campus administrators and the Director of Bilingual and ESL Education; approved ‘Restoration Funds’ that will alleviate crowded classrooms-  a return to the 22 students per teacher (22 to 1) standard ratio for kinder through fourth grade classes and the addition of two to ten new teachers at all secondary schools;  and recognized two Behlau ES staff members for their quick response to a campus fire.

Northside ISD will open three new schools when classes resume on Aug. 26.  Kay Franklin and Dr. Sara McAndrew elementary schools, and Dr. John Folks Middle School will join the 112 other schools that make up South Texas’ largest school district.  Their new logos are joining the NISD family of school mascots.    More than 101,000 students are expected to enroll for the 2013-14 school year.

The Northside ISD Learning Tree After School Program is hosting a Job Fair to fill 100 youth leader positions. The job fair will be held Thursday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northside Activity Center, 7001 Culebra Road.

Eighth grade gifted and talented students from Stinson Middle School have been working to raise cancer awareness in the community.  As part of their class study of the different types of cancer and treatments, students created 6 public service announcements (PSAs) and hosted a fundraiser for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s South Central Texas chapter. Now that the PSAs are posted on YouTube, their cancer awareness efforts have gone global.

Glass and Knowlton elementary schools were each recently awarded $5,000 grants from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.

Summer School is a time to catch up in your studies, learn something new, or try to get ahead. NISD offers a wide variety of courses, from classes to allow students to take more advanced and varied courses during the regular school year; classes needed for remediation; enrichment courses and campus that allow students to explore and have fun while learning something new.

Dr. Carol Harle was sworn in as a Northside ISD trustee Tuesday night. She replaces District 6 Trustee Randy Fields, who decided not to run for re-election after serving on the Board since 1999.
