January is School Board Recognition Month, and Northside ISD joins the Texas Association of School Boards and other districts across the state to thank our locally elected trustees for their service, and to educate the community about the important role that a school board plays in shaping the lives of children and communities.

Fifth grade students at Scobee ES received hands-on exposure to various band instruments as they begin to think about transition to middle school and what fine arts choice they may want to try. On the “flip” side, some NISD divers participated in a bio-medical study to help future Olympians.

NISD will hold two Winter Spectaculars this year. The 11th annual High School Winter (Dance) Spectacular will be on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at Brennan High School and the 1st Middle School Winter Dance Spectacular will be on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Stevens High school.

The 86th Legislative Session convenes Tuesday, Jan. 8, and Texas lawmakers will have tough decisions to make about finance, school choice, and assessment and accountability.

On the last Thursday of the month, the Boldt Elementary School library attracts a younger crowd. Librarian Dinorah Velazquez hosts Future Lil’ Mavericks and invites two to five year olds (and parents) to visit for story time, a craft activity, and a snack. Families can also look for books to check out and bring home.

This week’s feature video looks at Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in Northside and how it is infused in the elementary school curriculum. This Districtwide initiative teaches STEM at all levels and shows students how to make the connection in real world problems and challenges.

The John Marshall Law and Medical Services Magnet will open in fall 2019 on the Marshall High School campus. Approximately 175 students will comprise the inaugural freshmen class. Current eighth graders from NISD middle schools can apply to attend.

Northside ISD’s newest campus was officially dedicated on Oct. 29 as Mora Elementary School not only paid tribute to their namesake, Dr. Linda G. Mora, but also showcased student talent and artwork.

Alamodome Management today confirmed graduation dates for Northside ISD high schools. NISD will hold 12 graduations in June 2019, eleven of which are held at the Alamodome. The other one will be held at the Northside Sports Gym.
