Schools schedule Veterans Day celebrations

Here is a roundup of Veterans Days activities planned at several Northside ISD schools on Monday, Nov. 11.

Aue Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8 a.m.     

Where: 24750 Baywater Stage, 78255, cafeteria

 Aue fourth graders will perform a medley of patriotic songs at the ceremony in the cafeteria and a guest speaker, US Army 2nd Lieutenant David Donica, will address the students and staff. The school will host veterans in the library for refreshments before the ceremony. The school has also created a Military Wall of Honor in the foyer and students, staff, and guests are all asked to wear patriotic attire.

Bernal Middle School

When: Nov. 11, 8 a.m.     

Where: 14045 Bella Vista Place, 78252

Veterans and their families will attend a breakfast in the library with orchestra, choir, and band performances. At 8:30 a.m., a parent who is a veteran and their child will lead the Pledges and everyone will move outside to the flag pole. The Brennan HS ROTC will conduct a flag ceremony and the Bernal band will play the National Anthem.

Brandeis High School

When:  Nov. 11, 8 a.m.   

Where: 13011 Kyle Seale Parkway, 78249

Each year, Brandeis High School invites veterans who work in Central Office departments to be recognized at their ceremony along with the veterans in their school community. The AFJROTC leads the ceremony and the Brandeis Band pays musical tribute to all branches of the military. Veterans in attendance will be recognized by ROTC cadets with a memento. The school will host a breakfast for veterans after the ceremony in the auditorium.

Fernandez Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8 a.m.     

Where: 6845 Ridgebrook, 78250, cafeteria

The Fernandez ES Veterans Day ceremony will include performances from the Fernandez choir, Connally MS band, and the presentation of colors by Medina Valley HS AFJROTC. Guest speaker is Marine Staff Sergeant Giovanni Contreras.

The school will host veterans in the library for breakfast before the ceremony. Student Council and Boy Scouts will also take part in greeting guests.

Leon Springs Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8 a.m.     

Where: 23881 IH 10 W

The Leon Springs Elementary School choir will perform at the school’s ceremony. Special guest speakers include Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Congressman Will Hurd, and Maritime Enforcement Specialist 1st Class, Mike Burns.

Leon Valley Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8 a.m.     

Where: 7111 Huebner Road, 78240, gym

The Leon Valley Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony will include performances from the Marshall High School band and Leon Valley choir. American Legion Post 336 will post the colors and participate in the ceremony. Invited guests include Northside and City of Leon Valley officials and Marshall HS student athletes.

O’Connor High School

When:  Nov. 11, 8 a.m.   

Where: 12221 Leslie Road, 78023, flag pole and auditorium

The O’Connor High School AFJROTC will raise the flags at the school flag pole at 8 a.m. The ceremony begins at 8:20 a.m. in the auditorium with the O’Connor Band playing service songs as veterans are recognized with certificates.

An honor guard will take part in the Helotes Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony at 7:45 a.m. and the Stevenson Middle School ceremony at 9 a.m. An honor guard will also visit Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home at 10 a.m.

On Friday, Nov. 8, cadets will lay a wreath as part of the Brauchle Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony at 8:30 a.m.

Braun Station Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8:30 a.m.     

Where: 8631 Tezel Road, 78254

The Braun Station Elementary School Veterans Day ceremony will include a presentation about folding the American flag, as well as a performance from the Stevenson MS band. Braun Station students will perform America the Beautiful and both sing and sign the National Anthem.

Mireles Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8:30 a.m.     

Where: 12260 Rockwall Mill, 78253

The Mireles Choir will perform and Boy Scouts will present the flags at the Mireles Elementary school Veterans Day Ceremony.

Guest speaker is a Mireles ES parent who serves as a motivational speaker.

Briscoe Middle School and Hoffmann Elementary School

When: Nov. 11, 8:45 a.m.

Where: Briscoe MS, 4265 Lone Star Parkway, 78253

The annual Briscoe/Hoffmann Veterans Day ceremony will take place on the Briscoe football field. Music will be provided by the Briscoe band and the Hoffmann and Briscoe choirs will perform an all services medley.  Soloists include a Briscoe faculty member, a Briscoe parent, and the performance of Taps by a Briscoe band student. Special guest speaker is Lt. Col. (RET) Jose Martin Roodettes, Senior Aerospace Instructor at Taft HS. A Pass in Review will feature Air Force JROTC units from Brennan, Harlan, and Taft high schools. Veterans in attendance will represent World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Desert Freedom.

Following the ceremony, all students will have guest speakers from military careers and first responders visit their classes.

Zachry Middle School

When: Nov. 11, 9 a.m.     

Where: 9410 Timber Path, 78250, cafeteria

The Zachry MS Veterans Day ceremony will include performances from campus Fine Arts groups and the presentation of colors by Taft HS ROTC. The school will host veterans in the library for breakfast before the ceremony.

Northside School Museum Association

When: Nov. 11, 10 a.m.

Where: 6632 Bandera Road, Building F

The Northside Museum Association Veterans Day celebration will include a flag-raising by the Holmes HS AF JROTC and music from two Marshall HS students. Guest speaker is State Representative Ray Lopez.

Jay High School

When:  Nov. 11, 10:15 a.m.   

Where: 7611 Marbach Road, 78227, auditorium

The Jay High School TX-782nd AF JROTC is hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony in the school auditorium. They will recognize Jay teachers and staff who have served and family members that are veterans. They will also host a breakfast in the library after the event. 

Jefferson Middle School

When: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m.     

Where: 10900 Shaenfield, 78254, cafeteria

The Jefferson Middle School Veterans Day ceremony will include performances from the Jefferson and Ward Elementary School choir. The Taft High School ROTC will provide an Honor Guard. Guest speaker is LTC Kristen Shifrin, Department Chair and Professor of Military Science at UTSA. VFW Post 1533 will present certificates of participation to Patriot Pen Essay Contest participants.
