Seven NISD students are National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

September 13, 2019

Seven Northside ISD high school seniors have been named 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

They are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

Now these top students will compete for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be awarded next spring. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.

The Northside ISD National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are:

Brandeis HS

Radhika Kannan

Clark HS

Samuel Barton

Antonio Rodriguez

Theodore Trakas

Health Careers HS

Dharma Suarez-Palacios

Donnel Zhu

O’Connor HS

Ryan Jacob

Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
