Northside ISD is encouraging families with children who qualify for free Pre-Kindergarten to register early. As an incentive, any student who is enrolled before June 28 will receive a free school supply starter pack. The school supplies are given in combination with community partner Firstmark Credit Union.
To qualify, a child must be four-years-old on or before Sept. 1. They also must be one of the following: educationally disadvantaged (income eligible), limited English speaker, homeless, under the care of DPS/Foster Care, a child of an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, the child of a family member that was killed or injured during active military duty, or the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas award.
NISD places high priority on early childhood education
Research shows that high-quality early childhood education will not only make children better communicators at an early age, but will also give them better learning skills that can help them throughout their lives.
Northside ISD recently expanded its Pre-Kindergarten programs to be full day at 33 elementary school campuses across the District. It will also continue to offer half-day Pre-K programming at 35 additional campuses.
Those qualifying for free Pre-Kindergarten are encouraged to register now to ensure space availability.
A study by Betty Hart and Todd Risley shows that children from lower-income families hear a staggering 30 million fewer words than children from higher-income families by the time they are four years old.
“This gap puts children at a significant disadvantage and why it is so important to get this population enrolled in Pre-K,” says Patti Sanchez, Executive Director of Elementary Instruction.
“What sets Northside’s Early Childhood programs apart from other programs is the high quality of our staff and curriculum,” Sanchez continues. “Our classes are taught by state-certified Early Childhood teachers and trained Instructional Assistants.”
The Northside ISD Pre-K program focuses on essential foundational skills in Early Literacy. Daily work time is offered through learning stations and is critical to academic learning. Time spent playing outdoors supports physical development and social and emotional development.
