More than 400 NISD string students will have the opportunity of a lifetime when they learn from and perform with Haydn Vitera, former member of the Grammy-winning Asleep at the Wheel as part of an Artist Residency program, “Electrify Your Strings (EYS).”

Organized through SA POWR (San Antonio Parents of Orchestras Who Rock), four participating middle schools and two high schools will receive instruction from Vitera in the areas of improvisation, composition, and personal expression.  EYS is an intensive rock and roll workshop for school music education departments that boosts student self-esteem and motivation.

Clinics will be held on campuses Thursday and Friday, with a culminating concert with all the students held on Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Aztec Theater. Tickets are now on sale at ticketmaster.com or the Aztec Theatre box office.

“This is an amazing opportunity for orchestra students to step away from the music stand and sheet music, and connect with music and other musicians in a whole new way,” says James Miculka, director of Fine Arts programs in NISD.

Vitera has also performed with Stevie Wonder, George Strait, Delbert McClinton, Rick Trevino, and Los Lonely boys.
