NISD will officially dedicate its second comprehensive sports gym on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. with a Texas-sized pep rally.
The event will include a patriotic showcase with representatives from all high school JROTC units presenting the colors and the singing of the national anthem by Holmes High School volleyball player and internet sensation Marina Garcia.
Also involved are more than 500 student participants from all ten comprehensive high schools including pep squad and drill team officers, varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, mascots, and musicians.
The last time that NISD opened a competitive gym was in 1973 when Paul Taylor Field House opened to serve the then three high schools, five middle schools, and 18 elementary schools.
“When we open Harlan High School in 2017, we will have 22 boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams, so this facility is vital to help accommodate the number of UIL games that we play each week,” said Dr. Brian Woods, superintendent.
The Northside Sports Gym has a seating capacity of 2,500 and 88,389 square feet of space, compared to Paul Taylor’s 27,000 square feet.
Located on Loop 1604 near Bandera Road at the Farris Athletic Complex, the sports gym was built out of savings from School Bond 2010.
The public is invited to the dedication ceremony. In addition, the event will be live webcast at nisd.net/live.
