Brenda Johnson, orchestra teacher at O’Connor HS, was told by her principal, Jackie Horras, that NISD-TV would be coming to take video of her classroom Tuesday morning. She had no idea it was all a ruse.

After the videographer (actually from KENS5 TV) set up while Johnson continued directing her students, a parade of well-wishers streamed through her classroom door including Superintendent Dr. Brian Woods and News Anchor Deborah Knapp who announced that Johnson was the 2016-17 ExCEL Award winner for NISD.

“I’m shocked,” she said as her students applauded the announcement. “This is a testament to all teachers who love what they do. I love music and I love kids.”

The ExCEL Award is given to outstanding teachers in San Antonio by KENS5TV and San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) representatives who joined the assembly and presented Johnson with a silver apple and a $1,000 check.

Johnson started her teaching career in NISD as the head orchestra director at Hector Garcia MS when the school opened in 2009.

“This is also a testament to the students here, many of whom started with me in fifth and sixth grade and I now have the pleasure of teaching at the high school level,” she said.

The story will air on KENS this Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. and again on Great Day SA on Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. To see pictures from the surprise announcement, click here.
