State cancels summer STAAR tests for 5th/8th grades; NISD's program goes through Thursday

June 13, 2016

Late Friday, June 10, school districts in Texas were informed that Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath cancelled the summer administration of the STAAR tests for grades 5 and 8. Because STAAR results will not be available, grade placement decisions under the Student Success Initiative will not be required.

In order to ensure students continue to receive appropriate academic support, Summer Accelerated Instruction program for 5th and 8th graders will continue through this week; however, the last school day will be Thursday, June 16. The District strongly encourages parents to allow their children to attend this summer program for the remainder of the week.

In lieu of convening a Grade Placement Committee, principals will schedule Transition Meetings in late July and early August. The purpose of the meetings is to:

·         Review students’ academic standing in the area of need, Reading and/or Math including:

o   Report card averages

o   Historical STAAR scores

o   Teacher recommendations

·         Ensure that the development of an Accelerated Instruction Plan is in place; and

·         Make recommendation on placement or retention.
