State Poet Laureate plants “poet trees” at Howsman

December 16, 2015

Dr. Carmen Tafolla, State Poet Laureate of Texas, chose Howsman ES as a Planting Poet Trees School. According to Tafolla, the selection committee received many applications from across the state, but they felt Howsman stood head and shoulders above others in its desire to introduce its students to the power of poetry.

She spoke to an assembly of student about expressing themselves through the art of poetry. She then worked with a smaller number of students during a writing workshop, with an ultimate goal of publishing some of their works in her next book.

“My sincere hope is that planting these small seeds today will grow a beautiful forest of masterful creative writers all over Texas for years to come,” says Dr. Tafolla.

Dr. Tafolla also donated a set of books to the school’s library. Click here to learn more.
