Young musicians learn more than just notes

December 9, 2015

Northside prides itself on the music program offered at all 75 elementary schools. Students learn to read music, are introduced to a variety of instruments, and develop skills to equip them to be successful in life, all while having fun.

The comprehensive elementary music program provides extensive opportunities for all students to develop an appreciation, understanding, and skills in music by learning about introductory musical instruments.

Music instruction also helps make a more rounded child, according to music teacher Christopher Giles. “You learn to work together as a team, which is an important life lesson,” he said.

Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas.

“It has everything to do with how they enjoy school,” says David Cain, NISD Vocal Music Supervisor. “And when they enjoy school, they are more successful.”
