When Roxanne Brown, GT teacher at Clark HS, was told by her principal, Dr. Jerry Woods, that NISD-TV would be coming to take video of her classroom Tuesday morning, she had no idea it was all a ruse.
After the videographer (actually from KENS5 TV) set up, a parade of well-wishers streamed through her classroom door including News Anchor Deborah Knapp who announced that Brown was the 2015-16 ExCEL Award winner for NISD.
“I’m shocked,” she told the group which included her freshman class. “I’m glad I told the students to look nice today.”
The ExCEL Award is given to outstanding teachers in San Antonio by KENS5-TV and San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) who joined the assembly and presented Brown with a silver apple and a $1,000 check.
A Clark HS graduate, Brown has been teaching for 25 years with 15 of those years at her alma mater. She is credited with developing a model for Gifted and Talented programming, now called GT Leadership 1, which is now taught at every high school in NISD. Her more recent contribution to Clark HS is the development of a Quiz Bowl Team for the school. Only four years old, the team has qualified for the National Tournament every year.
“As a Clark graduate, I am proud that my most significant contributions to education have come while working at the school that provided me a great education,” she stated in her award submission.
The story will air on KENS this Thursday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
