Athletes have opportunity to receive baseline concussion testing

July 8, 2015

Northside ISD has partnered with Methodist Health Care to offer baseline concussion testing to middle and high school athletes. Every year, more than three million sports-related concussions occur, mostly in middle and high school athletes.

To that end, NISD athletes have the opportunity to participate in an ImPACT® Baseline Concussion Test on Saturday, July 25 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Methodist Health Care System, 8109 Fredericksburg Road. To register, call (210) 575-0355.

A baseline test establishes the standard that’s normal for an individual’s brain, and is used as a comparison tool when an athlete experiences a possible concussion. The information gathered from ImPACT® testing helps determine when and if the athlete is ready to resume regular activities, including athletics.

Computerized baseline screenings are common in collegiate and professional athletics. Methodist Healthcare System, in conjunction with Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio, and the Valero Alamo Bowl are offering the baseline testing for free.

Registration is limited to 45 students per hour. Parents are invited to wait in the lobby, and are asked to arrive 15 minutes ahead of time to ensure that testing begins on time.
