Parents learn how to teach their kids to say no to drugs & alcohol

April 15, 2015

The O’Connor High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association (PTSA) will host a workshop called “Can Your Teen Say No?” on Wednesday, April 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The workshop is opened to all NISD parents and students.

“With prom and graduation celebrations just around the corner, this is a timely workshop for parents and teens to get the information needed to help them be informed and safe,” says Dawn Koester, O’Connor HS PTSA Student Safety Programs chairperson.

A panel of speakers will talk about the health risks and consequences of underage drinking and social hosting (aka adults who furnish alcohol to underage drinkers.) Speakers include a member of the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, an agent from the Drug Enforcement Agency, representatives from the San Antonio Police Department, and NISD guidance counselors.

Information will include social hosting laws and accountability, new drug trends in the San Antonio area and signs and symptoms of drug use, and effective tools to empower parents to deter underage drinking. In addition, SAPD will bring “drunk goggles” to show parents first-hand how difficult and dangerous it is to function while impaired.

“Our nation’s number one health problem is alcoholism and drug dependency,” says Koester. “Parents – you are the number one influence on your children. Please join us – and bring your teenager.”
