NISD opens two new schools

October 17, 2014

Two school namesakes are being honored this month as new Northside schools are officially dedicated in their honor.

Dr. Joe J. Bernal Middle School and Bonnie Ellison Elementary School will host dedication ceremonies which will not only pay tribute to their namesakes, but also showcase their student talent. Each dedication ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 21, Bernal Middle School, 14045 Bella Vista Place, 78253

Oct. 29, Ellison Elementary School, 7132 Oak Drive, 78256

Bernal Middle School is named for Dr. Joe J. Bernal, a former state senator representing San Antonio. He also served as member of the State Board of Education. Before he became an elected official, Bernal worked as a school teacher and school administrator. He is credited for authoring the first Texas bilingual education act as a state Senator in 1969.

Ellison Elementary School is named for Bonnie Ellison, the longtime School-Business-Community Partnerships Director for NISD who helped establish and lead the Northside Education Foundation. She was also the District’s first public relations director. She retired in 2012 after 40 years in Northside.
