Zachry MS and Stevens HS are Team Up Champions!

May 10, 2014

Zachry Middle School and Stevens High School are champions in the 2014 Silver and Black Give Back Team Up Challenge and each will receive $20,000 to continue their community service projects.

Students and teachers from both schools were surprised Monday, April 15 by the Spurs Coyote, Rampage mascot T-Bone, several of the Spurs Silver Dancers, and a crew from Spurs Sports and Entertainment.

Last fall, both schools were among 20 local schools named semifinalists in the Team Up Challenge. They received $2,500 each to kick-start a community service project.

On April 8, the teams presented a final report on their projects to a panel of judges at the AT&T Center, and from those presentations, five champions were selected.

Zachry Middle School’s project is “The Zachry Community of Readers.” The book club held book readings at neighboring elementary schools, hosting book swaps and social events, gave away free books, and made bookshelves that are housed in the community. Club sponsors are Cynthia Carnes and Rebecca Medrano, both English Language Arts teachers. Zachry was also a Team Up semifinalist back in 2011 with a different service project.

Stevens High School created the project, “Operation: From Stevens with Love,” to support military families affected by deployment. The GT Leadership class assembled care packages for deployed members of the Stevens family with support and donations from their school and local community. The group also visited a Wounded Warriors luncheon and provided treats for injured soldiers. The class has chronicled their Team Up experiences on a blog. GT Teacher at Stevens High School is Dorothy Morgan.

Last year, Carson Elementary School was the first Northside school to be crowned a Team Up champion for their Family Fitness Fridays initiative.

The Team Up Challenge is an initiative of Silver & Black Give Back, and is a youth-led service program. Student projects address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness, or Uniformed Services. San Antonio Spurs and Rampage players have worked alongside the students to help bring their projects to life.
