Makayla and Alyssa Esparza, students at Northwest Crossing ES, are two of the seven winners in the Mayor’s Fitness Council (MFC) 2013 Healthy Heroes campaign.
The Healthy Heroes Award is an initiative of the MFG that recognizes adults and youth who have made positive changes to improve their quality of life and healthy, have influenced those around to crate healthy changes, and/or influenced the health and fitness of the community as a whole.
Makayla and Alyssa were chosen from 151 nominations for creating a group called “Fitness FUNatics” to engage their community to become physically active. The Fitness FUNatics meet 3 to 4 times a week and do a variety of activities such as kickball, tennis, basketball, work out circuit stations, volleyball, and martial arts. The pair contacted fitness instructors, who now come out and offer their services for free to help work with the kids in their community. Approximately 20 students come out to each Fitness FUNatics event and they hope to expand their program to other neighborhoods.
