In honor of the 115th anniversary of the National PTA and PTA Appreciation Month, please consider joining your school’s PTA so that you can help make a difference in the lives of children.
Every NISD school has a PTA, and membership costs just $5 to $10 depending on the campus.
“The time commitment is as little or as much as you make of it,” said Donna Smith, President of the NISD Council of PTAs, and the mother of three Marshall High School graduates.
Across Northside, 21,554 parents are members of campus PTAs.
Parents can volunteer to help out with just one event or program a year, or they can commit to a few hours a week. Regardless, it’s important that parents join, Smith said.
“We want to provide programs for children to help them be successful,” Smith said. “Our children are priceless.”
It’s also critical that as many parents as possible join their school’s PTA because it does have a ripple effect at the state level.
“Joining PTA will not only help your child at his or her school, but when the Texas PTA goes to the Legislature to get laws passed to protect children, there’s strength in numbers,” Smith said.
Today’s PTAs are less focused on providing material items to children and schools and more driven to sponsor programs and events that support students and their education.
These include programs on teen dating violence, teen driving, cyberbullying, and depression, for example. In addition, NISD PTAs annually organize the Reflections program to honor the fine arts talents of students. And PTAs facilitate the Jack Jordan Scholarship Fund to annually award a $2,400 college scholarship to a graduate of each NISD high school.
