Bennie Cole, the first new NISD Trustee since 2005, was sworn into office Tuesday night. Cole replaces District 2 Trustee Annie Holmes, who decided not to run for re-election after serving two terms on the Board.
"Northside has always been a school district that was on the cutting edge regarding education," said Cole, who was sworn in by his niece, Karen Kennard, attorney for the city of Austin. "I want to work on recapturing dropouts, supporting teachers, counselors and all those involved with the education of our students and educate the taxpayers on what it means to be involved."
Trustees Lynn Britton, M'Lissa Chumbley, and Bobby Blount also were re-elected and were sworn into office as well.
Cole, a longtime community volunteer, was a founding member of the Northside Education Foundation and has served on the Citizens' Bond Committee and the Citizens' Bond Advisory Committee. Now retired, Cole served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force and more than a decade in civil service.
