To help celebrate National School Counseling Week, the NISD Guidance and Counseling Department has unveiled its new logo, which represents the seven “skills” counselors work to instill in all students.
The seven skills or character traits, often referred to as “The Texas 7” are: motivation to achieve in school, self confidence development, interpersonal and cross-cultural effectiveness, responsible behavior, communication, and problem-solving and decision-making.
These seven skills are mandated by the Texas Education Agency and are designed to be the building-blocks of a healthy and productive future for students. To raise more awareness about The Texas 7, the NISD Guidance Department also has developed explanatory posters, one for elementary students and the other for secondary students.
Information about the seven skills, also can be found on the NISD Guidance Department website.
The unique contributions of school counselors to schools and students are being recognized during National School Counseling Week, which this year is Feb. 7-11. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
"School counselors are a critical factor in the cultivation of safe, strong and well-prepared community," said Dr. Deborah Healy, Director of NISD's Guidance Department. "I am so proud of the work they do with the students in NISD!"
NISD’s 250 school counselors have contact with all 94,702 students in the District through classroom presentations and individual visits to help guide students in course selection, maximizing educational opportunities, and developing skills for future success.
