For the third year in a row, NISD juniors will be able to take the SAT college entrance exam for free, thanks for money allocated by the Northside ISD Board of Trustees.

Once again, Northside is expecting a large kindergarten enrollment for the upcoming school year, making it all the more critical that parents register their children during Kinder Roundup in order to secure a seat at their neighborhood school. More than 7,500 kindergarten students are expected to enroll for the 2017-18 school year.

Northside ISD is holding an Auxiliary Job Fair to fill more than 195 positions for bus drivers, food service workers, food service manager trainees, police officers, custodians, and maintenance workers.

More than 51,000 elementary students from across Northside ISD, and thousands more from across the city of San Antonio were inspired by local heroes during “Heroes for Health Day,” a collaborative effort across the county to stress the importance of health and fitness for children.

Three first-year and three veteran teachers were named District Educators of the Year at special celebrations held annually to honor teachers who give 100 percent when it comes to improving the lives of children. In addition, Northside’s nominee for the 2017 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching was announced.

Seth Juarez, a 5th grader at Lewis Elementary School, is the grand prize winner in the 2017 Texas Cavaliers River Parade Art Contest. He was one of four NISD elementary student finalists.

This year’s NISD Special Olympics attracted more than 1,500 special athletes to compete in various track and field events at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The theme for the 48th annual competition was “Special Olympian Superpowers” and athletes showed their superpowers in super ways as they worked their way to the finish line.

Georgette Carrasco, a fifth grade Special Education Collaborative teacher at Franklin ES, is a finalist for the prestigious H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, recognizing her as one of the best educators in Texas.

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: held a public hearing on the District’s Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR); approved the use of high school allotment funds to subsidize AP exams for students; and appointed five campus administrators including an elementary principal.

Students at Driggers Elementary School learned about being heart healthy during a three-week Jump Rope for Heart campaign. The American Heart Association campaign included raising money to help children with heart issues. The students set a goal to raise $3,000 and exceeded that goal while having fun along the way.

University Health System is offering a convenient way for parents to stay up-to-date with their child’s immunizations. They will dispatch a mobile clinic to four NISD campuses in March. Flu shots are also available for students.

Allen ES kicked off National Children's Dental Health Month with a visit from the dentist. More than 200 students received free dental exams and a lesson on dental hygiene when a group of dentists and dental assistants from the City of San Antonio Metro Health Dental Program visited the school.

The 20th annual Los Leones Student Arts Festival has something for everyone. This family-oriented event will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes an art show and sale with more than 2,500 pieces of high quality student artwork by NISD students.

“LibraryPalooza, That Author Thing!,” an author festival for teens,  will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Brandeis HS. This year’s event will include authors Jay Asher, Faith Erin Hicks, Lauren Kate, Alex London, Lauren Oliver, and Lisa Yee.

It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s a Northside Education Foundation (NEF) Superhero 5K!  Attention Northside community, it’s time to unite for a special operation benefiting NISD staff and students on Saturday, May 6 at SeaWorld.

Northside ISD celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun and educational lessons throughout the District.  At Franklin ES, students dressed up as if they were a decade old, made crafts with 100 items, and enjoyed many other activities focused on the number 100.
