Three first-year and three veteran teachers were named District Educators of the Year at special celebrations held annually to honor teachers who give 100 percent when it comes to improving the lives of children. In addition, Northside’s nominee for the 2016 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching was announced.

Natalie Tan, 5th grader at Locke Hill ES, is the grand prize winner in the 2016 Texas Cavaliers River Parade Art Contest. She was one of four NISD elementary student finalists.

Students at Business Careers HS are expanding their personal development and understanding of the business world with the help of mentors from the business community. The magnet school has about 140 mentors who meet with the students on a one-to-one basis

Last night, Trustees discussed and took action on several items: approved the Cole ES attendance zone, recognized award-winning Fine Arts educators and Counseling programs, named the Rhodes ES library after longtime principal, and approved contractors for bond construction projects.

Warren HS students in Chase Haecker's Construction Technology classes, also known as woodshop, are learning about community responsibility through class projects. The students build items for non-profit organizations such as toys for the Elf Louise Toy Drive and framing walls that will be used in houses for Habitat for Humanity.

Construction of new schools and classroom additions at older schools is at a fever pitch to ensure that classrooms and improved facilities are ready for current students and the thousands of new students expected over the next couple of years. NISD is growing by around 1,500 to 2,000 students a year.

Making Valentine cards proved to be more than just a fun and creative lesson for second graders at Scobee ES. The students made cards for the elderly residents at Sarah Roberts French Home, the oldest continuously licensed nursing facility in Bexar County.

The “LibraryPalooza, That Author Thing!” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Brandeis HS. The teen Author Fest will include authors Leigh Bardugo, Kiera Cass, Michael Grant, April Henry, George O’Connor, and Brandon Sanderson.

Some of the hardest working employees in NISD are the police officers who keep our students, staff and schools safe and secure.  NISD police officers are fully Certified Texas Peace Officers which means they have all the authority and training of municipal police officers.  But in NISD, they receive additional special training to work with students and their families.

The 19th annual Los Leones Student Arts Festival has something for everyone. This family-oriented event will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes an art show and sale with more than 2,500 pieces of high quality student artwork by NISD students.

Three NISD Academic Decathlon teams advanced to state after competing against more than 20 teams from across the region at the 2015 Regional Academic Decathlon hosted at Warren High School.

At Murnin ES, teachers and students turned a day of learning into an exciting way to understand parts of a sentence by dressing like an adjective of their choice. Students chose such words as amazing (dressing as Spiderman), lazy (in pajamas), angry, sleepy, hungry, and even frumpy.

Members of the 1966 Marshall HS Boys Basketball State Championship team took center stage and were recognized during halftime at a recent Marshall game for what they accomplished 50 years ago.

Students at Linton ES are ballroom dancing!  The students were introduced to the elegant style of dance after a local dance company received a grant to offer free classes.  They meet once a week, after school and so far the students have learned the Rumba, Waltz, and Fox Trot.  Click here to see the video.

For 43 years, the Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale has been a Northside ISD tradition that has quietly raised nearly $14 million in college scholarships for students. This year’s event will again draw hundreds of students and livestock bidders.

Some students with disabilities, who attend Northside ISD's Reddix Center, are engaging in internships as they transition from student life into adulthood. Nearly one dozen Reddix students are interning at La Cantera Resort to learn about the hospitality industry. The students are between the ages of 18-22. Click here to learn more.
