Allen ES kicked off National Children's Dental Health Month with a visit from the dentist. More than 200 students received free dental exams and a lesson on dental hygiene when a group of dentists and dental assistants from the City of San Antonio Metro Health Dental Program visited the school.

The 20th annual Los Leones Student Arts Festival has something for everyone. This family-oriented event will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes an art show and sale with more than 2,500 pieces of high quality student artwork by NISD students.

“LibraryPalooza, That Author Thing!,” an author festival for teens,  will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Brandeis HS. This year’s event will include authors Jay Asher, Faith Erin Hicks, Lauren Kate, Alex London, Lauren Oliver, and Lisa Yee.

Northside ISD celebrated the 100th day of school with many fun and educational lessons throughout the District.  At Franklin ES, students dressed up as if they were a decade old, made crafts with 100 items, and enjoyed many other activities focused on the number 100.

The 44th Annual Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale proved to be a record- breaking year, raising more than $900,000 in scholarships for Northside ISD students. The week-long event turned out nearly 800 entries to include pigs, goats, lambs, rabbits, poultry, steer, and mechanical agriculture products.

The unique contributions of school counselors to schools and students are being recognized this week as part of National School Counseling Week, Feb. 6-10. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

Folks MS students are growing herbs and vegetables with the help of an indoor tower garden purchased through an NEF grant. In their Family and Consumer Science Class students are learning about food sustainability, the science behind food production, and are receiving hands-on experience by growing and sometimes pollinating their own food.

Each February educators across the country celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs. This year’s theme from the Association for Career and Technical Education for CTE Month is “Celebrate Today, Own Tomorrow” giving school districts the opportunity to demonstrate how students are not only college-ready but also career-ready.

The Eco Friends Club at Kuentz ES is setting the example to clean up the environment with a huge recycling program. Since the organization formed back in 2011, the students at Kuentz have collected more than 2 million recycling items to include plastic and aluminum.

Four NISD Academic Decathlon teams advanced to state after competing against more than 25 teams and 240 students from across the region at the 2017 Regional Academic Decathlon hosted at Warren High School.

For 44 years, the Walter Gerlach Livestock Show and Sale has been a Northside ISD tradition that has quietly raised nearly $15 million in college scholarships for students. This year’s event has 795 entries which will again draw hundreds of students and livestock bidders.

A new campus organization for male students at Villarreal Elementary School is teaching the students to be respectful, set goals, and how to dress for the occasion.

Middle school students at Ross MS (and all NISD middle schools) have a chance to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) using LEGOs and robots in a fun, after school environment. University Health System is offering a convenient way for high school students to stay up-to-date with their immunizations, receive a flu shot, and prepare for college vaccination requirements. They will dispatch a mobile clinic to NISD high schools in January and February.

Kellen Dukatnik, a 7th grade student at Hector Garcia MS, believes in spreading the Christmas cheer, bringing that giving spirit to ten families at Fernandez ES. He raised more than $2,500 to turn his vision into a reality.

There are so many reasons why Northside ISD is a strong school district. In 2016, Northside hit an all-time high in enrollment, added more than 700 new teachers, opened two new schools, and more than 6,700 students received diplomas in 12 commencement ceremonies.
