Rockin’ the Brain with Academics

Math Totally Rocks at Hatchett!
What are the three most coveted things at Hatchett?   A spot on the Math Rocks bulletin board, an appearance on HNN morning news, and the shiny travelling trophy!   We have started the year rockin’ our math facts in 1st-5th with our fast facts competition!   At the end of each month, students are timed and scored for accuracy on their basic facts.  Classes with the highest percentage of 4’s and 3’s win for the month (4 being the highest for speed and accuracy).

What is the single most important thing you can do to help your child become a good reader?  The answer: read to your child every day.  Studies have found that “children who are read to become better readers and achieve more in school” (Wells, G 1986) .

What is the single most important thing your child can do to become a better reader?   The answer: read every day for at least 25 minutes.   Reading every day can even increase your child’s vocabulary.  Research has shown that children learn an average of 4,000 to 12,000 new words each year as a result of book reading.
